pride Stories: future is queer. Aren

Aren (@salvador.daddi) told us some  thoughts about pride.

Have you ever been victim of discrimination because of your sexual orientation?

I most definitely have, even within my own cultural community. Growing up, a lot of us LGBTQ+ folks face discrimination throughout our lives without even realizing it until we’re adults. Whether it be at the workplace, in our communities or out in public, discrimination happens frequently and can often be felt.

Diversity and visibility, why is this important for you?

Representation is incredibly important. The more visible and in people’s faces we are, the more we are seen and recognized. Overtime, showing up and being visible will demand for respect and equality. There are so many of us, all different and diverse and beautiful in our own way, it’s important all our true colours are seen, represented and celebrated. Diversity and visibility are also important for those coming out, discovering their sexual orientation or coming to terms with their gender identity, because they get to see other people’s bravery and admire them as role models. You never know who you’re inspiring and how!

What actions you take on your daily basis to fight stigmas in the LGBTQ community?

This is a great question. Opening up a transparent dialogue is a fundamental start! At work, I speak up when I think there can be more LGBTQ+ representation in the work that we do, or when certain topics pertain to LGBTQ+ issues. In my personal life, I am very vocal speaking with friends in and out of the community about what’s going on, LGBTQ+ issues, sharing stories and thoughts, and educating (and getting educated) where possible!
